Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week Red Socks Day Leadership & Sailing Experience July 3

A great day at the RNZYS to celebrate the Leadeship Legacy of Sir Peter Blake. Many thanks to our speakers:

Craig Monk GLOBAL SAILOR

Craig was on the podium as part of the winning Team NZ  crew in 1995 when we won the Americas Cup, and again for the successful defence in 2000.  He is no stranger to winning; his trophy’s include an Olympic bronze medal and numerous sailing accolades. From 2003-07 he was the Oracle Racing sailing team manager. In 2013 he was a grinder on the Swedish challenger Artemis. He was on boat when it nosedived during a training run in San Francisco.  Besides sailing, Monk has been involved in yachting in many other ways. He taught sailing at a private American Yacht in New York, run his own professional sailing company and worked for the Hillary Commission providing sports leadership training in secondary schools throughout New Zealand.

Craig will share with us how he has kept at the top of his game in the demanding sailing world, including

  • the power of  dreams and motivational goal setting
  • the importance of role models
  • staying focused and commitment for a long haul

Tim Alpe Chief JUCYFIER

Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award winner, Tim Alpe, is a dynamic New Zealand business leader, renowned for his ability to engage and motivate teams to achieve outstanding results.  He is the CEO and co-founder of JUCY, a global tourism company. The JUCY Group has more than 300 staff across New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the UK and US.

He will share his dream and leadership insights on

  • creating a brand that engages and resonates with customers
  • building a strong internal culture that good people want to be part of
  • using social media and next generation technology solutions

Tim strategic nous, strong networks and global connections passion and successful leadership saw him awarded Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2010. 

Jan Dawson HELMSWOMAN  

Jan Dawson is the first woman to lead the board of a major New Zealand bank and also the first to lead a Big Four accounting firm in Australasia.

Away from the boardroom, Jan is a skipper and MRX match racer and past president of Yachting NZ. She likes challenge – both professionally and outside work. “I’m not competitive – but I don’t like coming second. I do like winning. I like winning in business and in sport”

Jan will share her story and thoughts on

  • how skippering a boat is not unlike running business
  • making mistakes: why they are good for  self-improvement
  • the importance of diversity

She is an independent director for a number of New Zealand, namely Air New Zealand, AIG Insurance New Zealand, Meridian Energy and Beca Group. She is a member of Global Women and the 25 Percent Group

Jan’s recent accolades include receiving the 2014 Outstanding Contribution to Finance and Business award, Chartered Accountant of the Year Award 2011 and Excellence in Sports Governance Award in 2013.
